The Relations Between Motivation, Strategy Use, Frequency, and Proficiency in Foreign Language Reading: An Investigation With University English Language Learners in China

This study explores the structure of motivation in foreign language (FL) reading among 186 university English learners (ELLs) China, and investigated relations between motivation, strategy use, frequency, proficiency FL reading. The data were collected from three questionnaires section a mock College Test (Band 4). analyzed using exploratory factor analysis (EFA), correlation, hierarchical cluster analysis, t tests. EFA generated scales, one for intrinsic (i.e., Efficacy Engagement scale) two extrinsic Utility Value scale Academic scale). correlation analyses showed that only was significantly correlated with proficiency. identified groups students, who differed scales as their motivational profiles. Based on profiles, differences also observed.
